STEPHEN BRAINARD, 73, WORKED ON DWORSHAK DAM

SPOKANE Stephen J. Brainard, 73, a retired U.S. Army Corps of Engineers worker, died of congestive heart failure Sunday at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane.

He was born July 19, 1919, at Oakdale, Neb., to Vernon and Carrie Leach Brainard.

He graduated from Oakdale High School in 1937. He then at tended Boyles Business College at Omaha, Neb., for two years.

He married Lila Nielsen June 9, 1939, at Tekamah, Neb.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War, and retired as a chief petty officer.

He and his wife moved to Lewiston in 1967.

He retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1974 after the completion of the Dworshak Dam project. He then operated his own sharpening business from 1981 to 1991.

He attended the First Presbyterian Church of Clarkston, and had participated in the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program since 1990.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and golf.

Survivors include his wife at the family home in Lewiston, six sons, and 12 grandchildren.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Mountain View Funeral Home chapel in Lewiston. The Rev. G.P. Kendall of Lewiston will officiate.
