Mrs. Josephine Meriwether Othus, active Portland civic leader, died Thursday. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Holman & Lutz chapel with interment in Rose City Cemetery.

Mrs. Othus was best known for her work as President of the Housewives council. She was at one time a candidate for city commissioner and also devoted considerable time to the study of municipal ownership problems and milk distribution.

She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Wood Meriwether, who were related to Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark expedition.

Born in Shelby county, Kentucky, she lived with her family in Cripple Creek and Canon City, Colorado, before coming to Portland in 1911 to reside at 3055 N.E. Glisan street. She was married to James C. Othus in Lamar, Colorado. He died in 1934.

Surviving are four sons, J. Carey, Percy M., Byron F., and John O.; a sister, Mrs. Mary M. Monroe; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild, all of Portland.
