John "Jock" W. Sutherland
John ("Jock") W. Sutherland of Lompoc, California, passed away on May 10th at the age of 93. He was born September 3, 1917, in Clifton, Arizona. Jock received his B.S. degree in marine engineering from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, his Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and his M.Ed. in General Engineering from Pennsylvania State University.
He was an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard for 22 years before beginning a career in education at Allan Hancock Junior College where he taught full-time for 14 years, including service as Head of the Engineering and Mathematics Department and Chair of the Academic Policy and Planning Committee. He was chairman of the Vandenberg Village Community Services District Formation Committee and then served on the District board for six years. He was an avid golfer who also wrote poetry and painted in oils in his spare time. He had wide-ranging interests in science, art, literature, and history and was a formidable Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit opponent.
He is survived by Lisa Sutherland, his wife of 68 years; and by his children: Michael Sutherland of Marietta, Georgia, and Carol Paterson of Garland, Texas. He is also survived by his three grandchildren: Tracy Paterson and Jennifer Sutherland of Atlanta, Georgia, and Stephen Paterson of Austin, Texas.
