Cargill, John, of Weare, was born in Halton, Canada, near Guelph, May 1, 1852. When thirteen years of age, he came with his parents to Oceana County, settling on section 36 of Weare Township (our subject's present home being a part of the old homestead), among the earliest settlers in this part of the county, when neighbors were indeed scarce. Our subject spent his boyhood days on the farm, attaining such educational advantages as the common schools of the day afforded. In 1873 he purchased his present farm and began the making of one of Oceana's most comfortable homes. Dec. 24, 1880, he was married to Mrs. Alice Loveridge (Wagoner) of Ligonier, Indiana. Prior to 1893 he was a member of the local school board for twelve consecutive years, higway commissioner four years from 1879, and justice a similar term. In the spring of 1894 he was elected township treasurer, and is now serving in that capacity. He is also one of the coroners of the county, a member of Wigton Lodge No.251, F. & A.M., and both he and Mrs. Cargill are members of Weare M. E. church. *this article was found on page 11 of the "1895 Oceana County, Atlas"
