She was born March 12, 1922, in Tiffin, the daughter of Grover Cleveland Smith and Mildred Claudine Tate, and was the loving wife of the late Clarence Harold Hiser.
She was the mother of Jane Claire Funderburg and Ted Steven (Linda) Hiser; grandmother of James (Jennifer) Hiser Funderburg, Steven (Deanna) Hiser Funderburg, Helena Anne (Scott) Lasseter, Aric Hughes Hiser and Garrett Bevin Hiser; great-grandmother to nine; and great-great-grandmother to one. Helena was the sister of Howard Lewis (Marjorie) Smith, Mary Irene (Clayson) Loy, Betty Lou (Fred) Bowman and Martha Ann (William) Weber; and aunt to numerous nieces and nephews.
Helena was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Arthur William (Donna) Smith and Gilbert Tate (Madelyn) Smith.
Helena was a graduate of Tiffin Columbian High School and attended Heidelberg College. She was a homemaker, a gifted seamstress and gardener and had a passion for sketching and painting. For over a decade she was a salesperson and buyer in the housewares department at Lasalle's Department Store, Tiffin. Helena was a faithful member of Trinity United Church of Christ and, following Clarence's death, a member of New Beginnings.
She was a lifelong resident of the Tiffin area and Seneca County, until moving to Mississippi in May 2010. Helena was proud to claim her ancestors were early settlers of Clinton Township and the old family farm was right down the road from her residence on Greenfield Street.
A memorial service to celebrate Helena's life will begin at 2 p.m. Friday, May 27, 2011, at Engle-Shook Funeral Home and Crematory in Tiffin, 135 N. Washington St., Tiffin, OH 44883, (419) 447-1221. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery.
