A Clinton couple was killed Friday afternoon in a one-vehicle crash on Charles Seivers Boulevard in Clinton.
Clinton Police
Lt. David Queener said Willie Mae Rayfield, 74, and Oscar Virgil Rayfield, 85, 1270 Blockhouse Valley Road, South Clinton, were killed in the 4:15 p.m. crash.
Oscar Virgil Rayfield was driving a 1998 Dodge Caravan west on North Seivers Boulevard going toward Oak Ridge when the van went off the road near the Y-12 Federal Credit Union. Queener said the van went head-on into the building of Clinton Cycle Works. He said evidence at the scene indicates that the van traveled 167 feet before hitting the building.
Queener said police believe Rayfield may have suffered from some type of medical condition before the crash. He said Rayfield was wearing a seat belt, but he was not sure if Willie Mae Rayfield was wearing a seat belt. He said Anderson County Emergency Medical Service personnel may have cut her seat belt off, but he did not know. Both were dead at the scene, Queener said.
Traffic was stopped for some time while police and other emergency personnel worked at the scene. Queener said the van was partly inside the building, and the van had to be stabilized before emergency workers could get the victims out.
