Cecil J. Kammerer, 88, of Lebanon, died Thursday, March 31, 2011, at Homewood Health Campus in Lebanon.

Cecil was born May 26, 1922, in Sedalia. He was the last living child of fourteen born to the now deceased Jacob Calvin and Flora Ellen (Hufford) Kammerer. He attended Rossville schools.

After his early years spent in Sedalia, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1942. He served until November 1945, during World War II, and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

On Nov. 28, 1947, in Lebanon, Cecil and Barbara Jean Miller were married. Mrs. Kammerer died on June 24, 1980.

The first few years of his marriage were spent in Frankfort. He and his family moved to Lebanon, where he lived most of his adult life. After several different jobs, Cecil joined Detroit Diesel Allison Division of General Motors in Indianapolis. He worked there as a tool and die maker for 31 years, until he retired in 1981. One of the interesting projects he worked on was making fuel cells for the first Apollo spacecraft.

After retirement, Cecil spent several years in Jefferson and Frankfort before he returned to Lebanon several years ago.

Cecil enjoyed playing Euchre, gardening and spending his free time hunting, fishing, and bowling.

He was a Lifetime Member of the NRA, was a member of Boone Lodge No. 9 F.&A.M. in Lebanon, a Life-Member of the V.F.W. in Lebanon and a Life-Member of the American Legion in Lebanon.

Survivors include children, Linda K. Bell of Lebanon, James P. (Sandy) Kammerer of Switzerland, Fla., Jane E. Kelley and Joseph C. (Lois) Kammerer, all of Lebanon, Alice J. Bailey of Frankfort and Arnie L. Kammerer and companion, Twyla Floyd, of Lebanon; 10 grandchildren, Julie A. Biddle of Lebanon, Debbie J. Ullom of Carmel, Joshua A. (Tanya) Kammerer of Scottsdale, Ariz., Jacob C. (Laura) Kammerer of Lebanon, Dustin D. (Amber) Gleb of Frankfort, Nicole J. (Todd) Mader of Brownsburg, Brandy L. Bell of Frankfort, and Amanda Ranney and companion, Casey Noland, Dalton Floyd and Brandon M. Kammerer, all of Lebanon; and 10 great-grandchildren, Morgan B. Biddle, Hayden C. Biddle, Zachary S. Ullom, Isaac M. Ullom, Jalynn A. Gleb, Carter L. Gleb, Brody J. Gleb, Shae Esterline, McKinsey Noland and Kaleb M. Floyd.

He was preceded in death by two infant siblings; five brothers, Chester N. Kammerer, Wilbert C. Kammerer, Russell J. Kammerer, Bernard "Bean" Kammerer and James Kammerer; and six sisters, Velma Wilcox, Mildred L. Ham, Octavia Grinstead, Jeanette Kelly, Dolly Bollinger and Geneva Miller; and a son-in-law, William "Bill" Kelley.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 8, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Masonic services will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the mortuary. Funeral services are to be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, at Myers Chapel of Memories, with Pastor Lee Faust officiating. Interment will follow at Mts. Runn Cemetery in Boone County.
