Early Day Citizen of Kerr Succumbs
Funeral services for A. J. Burleson, 87, early day citizen of Kerr County and an old freighter, were held Friday in Sonora. Rev. L.K. Brown, Methodist minister officiated at the rites, which were conducted by Smith Funeral Home of Kerrville. Pallbearers were Judge Alvis Johnson, Frank Smith, J.H. Trainer, Sam Hull, T.R. Driskell and A. W. Awalt. Mr Burleson died Thursday at the home of a daughter Mrs. G. W. Archer, where he had been ill for the past seven weeks. Born in Throckmorton County, March 3, 1854, Mr. Burleson was married to Miss Henrietta Williams in LaGrange in 1878. The couple moved to Kerrville shortly afterward when it was a frontier village. For several years Mr. Burleson drove a freight wagon from San Antonio to Kerrville, using oxen as his first team. He had lived in Sonora 24 years. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. G. W. Archer of Sonora, Mrs. R. J. Matthews of Bakersfield, Calif., and Mrs. M. R. Mathews (sb Milton R. Watters) of London; two sons L. G. Burleson of Center Point and George Burleson of Sonora; two sisters Mrs. Mollie Crenshaw and Mrs. Dora Buchanan of Leakey. Thirty three grandchildren and 20 great great grandchildren also survive.
