She was born on December 12, 1921 in Richlands, NC to Elizabeth and Adron Whaley. She attended Miller Motte business school in Wilmington, NC before meeting Hubert Bellamy, who became her husband and the love of her life. They moved to Shallotte in 1953 and opened Shallotte Furniture, later to become Kimball's Furniture, where Ophelia and Hubert worked side by side for more than 30 years. There they met and enjoyed friendships with many people, and appreciate everyone who came in.
Ophelia will be remembered fondly as a wonderful cook and homemaker who personified Southern Hospitality, and for her dry sense of humor. Her greatest joy was her family. She loved music and dance, and played piano and sang harmony with her sisters whenever they were together. She and her late husband Hubert enjoyed traveling, and were interested in different cultures, geography, art, and cuisine. They spent many relaxing days on Holden Beach enjoying the surf and sun with family and friends.
Ophelia is survived by her daughter Rhonda Little and her husband Mark of Cary, NC, son Kimball Bellamy and his daughters Angel Schettini of Raleigh, NC and Kaitlin Bellamy of Shallotte, NC and son James E. (Jimmy) Bellamy and his wife Melody and their daughter Ashley Bourland of Shallotte, NC. She is also survived by brother-in-law C.L. Swartz of Wrightsville Beach, NC, sister-in-law Eloise Gibson, of Supply, brother-in-law Robert Bellamy, and by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Hubert H. Bellamy, her sisters, Mary Smith and Edna Swartz, brothers Enoch Hemby, Robert Hemby, Carson Whaley, Adron H. Whaley, and Harvey H. Whaley, Sr.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, May 24th from 1-2pm at Camp United Methodist Church, 4807 Main Street, Shallotte, NC.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm following the visitation.
Entombment will follow in the Brunswick Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
The family would like to thank Lower Cape Fear Hospice, Carolyn Gales, and Rita Wilkerson for the loving care they provided to Ophelia during her final illness.
