She was the daughter of the late Ernest Gurley and Bertha Walker Herring, and was also preceded in death by her beloved brother, E.G. Herring, Jr., sister, Annie Herring Moore, and nephew, William Shepherd Moore III.
Opal was employed by the State of North Carolina and worked as an administrator at UNC-Chapel Hill and as a Claims Deputy for the Employment Security Commission in Raleigh, NC. Opal returned to Wilmington after her retirement in 1986.
Her family was paramount in her life. She loved each one dearly and she was so proud of each family member.
Opal is survived by her children, Edwin L. West, Jr. and wife, Patsy, J. Wallace West and wife, Gail all of Wilmington, and Nancy West Ahlstrom and husband, Ken, of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Edwin L. West III, Pamela Gail Hurt and Karyn E. West; great-grandchildren, Edwin L. West, IV, John Hewlett West, Elijah Davis West, Hannah Kate Hurt and Caroline Hurt; a loving special family friend (#3), W. Richard Oates of Woodstock, GA; nephews, E. Guylar Herring and Dana S. Herring; nieces, Linda Moore Weir and Lila Moore Musselwhite; a sister-in-law, Mildred Cheek Herring; and a very special neighbor and friend, Tim Roberts. Her life overflowed with caring friends who filled her life with joy and companionship.
Interment will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens, 306 Bradley Drive, Wilmington, NC, 28409.
