Joseph Apple, of Clark's Hill, employee of the Big Four Railroad, was instantly killed at 3:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, when he was struck by a west bound freight train. The accident occurred between Stockwell and Rex. Mr. Apple was acting foremen of the section crew and as the freight train approached he attempted to get a hand-car off the track. Other members of the crew warned him to stand back, but he thought he would have time to remove the car, which was wedged between the rails. The pilot of the locomotive struck him and car and both were hurled for several feet. Mr. Apple was dead when fellow workmen reached his side.

Mr. Apple was born in Putnam county August 19, 1860, and had lived at Clark's Hill about 20 years. He had been employed on the section for several years and recently acted as assistant foremen. He was a member of the U. B. church at Clark's Hill and was a highly respected citizen.

Surviving are his widow and two children. Mrs. Guy Milligan, of Clark's Hill, and Grant Apple, of Indianapolis, formerly of Lafayette. The body was taken to the Milligan undertaking parlors at Clark's Hill, to be prepared for burial, and was taken to the family home Wednesday night. Funeral services will be conducted from the Christian church at Clark's Hill, at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Rev. Shumaker, pastor of the U. B. church, will officiate. Interment in the Clarks Hill Cemetery.
