Ephraim's father Samuel died in the Civil War of typhoid fever. In 1872 his mother Sarah Melissa (Shedd) Hall, sisters Martha Jane (12) and Nancy "Nannie" Hall (9), and Ephram (11) traveled from South Carolina to Bridgeville, Montana with their grandparents Joel and Elizabeth (Davis) Shed. Martha Jane often recalled the trip to Three Forks by ox teams, the hardships, the constant clouds of dust, and the fear of Indians. They came to help Jane's brother, James Shed, builder of bridges.

Ephraim moved around a lot. He was in Oregon and Washington where he at times stayed in East Olympia, at the home of his niece Agnes West DeBoer and her husband Jake. His mother also stayed there until her death. There were long periods that his family did not know where he was. They found out later he had died in Toledo, Washington.
