Mr. Mahoney passed away on Monday, September 18, 2000 at Weston Manor, Newcastle, WY.
He was born June 16, 1908, in Alva, WY to Hiram S. and Orah D. (McClendon) Mahoney. He attended Lame Jones elementary school and graduated from high school in Rapid City, South Dakota. Jay was a rancher for over 60 years and was also employed as a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office.
On June 7, 1932 he married Alda L. Gray. To this union five children were born. He later married Elsie Holcomb on Dember 5, 1957. She died July 7, 1980. He later moved to Newcastle to retire near his children.
Mr. Mahoney was a member of the Reorganized Latter Day Saints Church, the Crook County Farm Bureau, and the Crook County School Board. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved to bowl and continued to do so until he was 88. He also loved music and dancing.
Survivors include one daughter Barbara Van Every and her husband Bob of Newcastle, WY; three sons, Gerald Mahoney and his wife Betsy of Alva, WY, Hiram Mahoney and his wife Frankie and Allen Mahoney and his wife Janice all of Newcastle, WY. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his two wives; one son Alton Leon Mahoney; one grandson Jay Mahoney; two granddaughters, Donna Rae Williams and Penny Mahoney; two brothers, Rex and Steve Mahoney; and one sister Martha Mahoney.
