Cabell sheriff probing death

Man found in home with severe head injuries dies later at hospital

By BRYAN CHAMBERS - The Herald-Dispatch

MILTON -- The Cabell County Sheriff's Department is investigating the death of a Milton man found in his home with head trauma.

Walter Houston "Okie" Hysell, 69, of Route. 1, Milton, was found in his living room about 8 p.m. Tuesday by two family members, Sheriff Kim Wolfe said.

Hysell was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead late Tuesday night, Wolfe said.

Deputies were originally dispatched to the home for a possible attempted suicide , which was later changed to a homicide investigation.

"The only thing we know right now is that he suffered blunt force trauma to the head, and that the injuries weren't consistent with that of a suicide," Wolfe said.

According to the police report, Richard Hysell, 35, of Milton, and his son, Joshua Hysell, stopped by Walter Hysell's home before leaving on a hunting trip. They stopped to ask Walter Hysell if he wanted to go to a relative's house to watch television. They found Walter Hysell in his living room and called police.

Sgt. Mike McCallister of the sheriff's department would not comment on how Joshua Hysell and Richard Hysell are related to Walter Hysell.

Walter Hysell gave a statement to detectives at the hospital before he died, McCallister said. The body has been sent to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy.

"We have a list of people we are looking at, but nothing that points to a main suspect," McCallister said.
