Edward F. Overmyer enlisted in Fremont, Ohio, on May 2, 1864, as a corporal in Co. K of the 169th Regiment of the Ohio National Guard. While on duty at Fort Ethan Allen, Edward contracted rheumatism from lying on the ground in inclement weather. He was discharged on Sept. 4, 1864. He was in sound health before the war, but continued to be plagued by ill health afterwards, suffering not only rheumatism, but also disease of the heart and spine. He became totally disabled, unable to work and unable to walk.
