Elizabeth Swank James was born May 20, 1805, in Ohio, was married to Edmund James June 9, 1822, joined the M.E. Church in 1823, of which she was an exemplary member till her death, which occurred in Summit Grove, Vermillion County, IN, Friday about 12 p.m., July 12, 1889. Her age was 84 years, 1 month, and 23 days. She was sick but 2 days, and was able to spend the day Wednesday visiting Rev. Thomas Davis. She died without a struggle, full of years and full of honors - loved by God and her neighbors and children and grandchildren. Her home was always a welcome one to itinerant ministers in early Methodism in Indiana. John Strang, J.F. Thompson, R. Hargrave, and A. Wood have rested under her hospitable roof, and shared of her Christian hospitality, and while we today miss her from our circle, she doubtless is with her dear companion. Her children and grandchildren have for years been in the habit of celebrating her birthday. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. T.C. Davis, at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 13, 1889, at the Summit Grove Church. Her remains were laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery of Summit Grove.
