Sylvester was the son of Matthew Boydston Harman and Elvira (unknown). He had two brothers:William H. Harman Bryan, Texas; John F. Harman Clarksville, Texas. His father died between 1850-55 in Noxubee Co. Mississippi. His mother married Peyton H. Rogers in Noxubee Co. May 19, 1855 and they moved to Clarksville, Red River Co. Texas. He was an attorney and judge in Red River Co. Texas. Sylvester and Sarah had the following children: Swan, Ada, Matthew, Minne, Veva, Edith and Lucille
