BENJAMIN FRANKLIN COFFIN.
Benjamin Franklin Coffin was born in North Carolina October 8, 1831, and died at his home near Moravia, Iowa, Sept. 15, 1921, at the age of 89 years, 11 months and 27 days.
In 1852, having reached his majority, he went west to seek his home and fortune. He stopped for a few years at Rushville, Ind., where he was
married to Sophia Shelton, Sept. 2, 1855. In 1856, he came with his wife to Iowa and settled in Monroe county. He moved from there to a farm near Unionville where he lived but a short time and then purchased the farm where he spent the remaining days having lived there for more than sixty years. Coming to Iowa at the early date he became one of its pioneers, enduring many inconveniences and hardships incidental to early settlers.
He was the father of eight children, six daughters and two sons, three of the daughters preceded him in death. The remaining children are: Alice A. Sanders of Moravia; D. M. Coffin, Selma, Iowa; Cora E. Boyer, Topeka, Kans.; J. S. Coffin, Moravia, and Lottie C. Yenger, Blakesburg. His faithful wife departed this life in 1909. Since that time he has lived with his daughters, Mrs. Lottie Yenger and Mrs. Alice Sanders.
When a young man he was converted and united wtih the Missionary Baptist church. During his active days he was a regular attendant at its
services. While deprived of this privilege in later years because of his physical condition, he remained a firm believer unto the end.
He leaves to mourn his departure the sons and daughters above mentioned, nineteen grand children and twenty-two great grand children, besides a large circle of neighbors and acquaintances.
Funeral services were conducted at the late residence Saturday afternoon by Rev. Childs of Coatsville, Mo., and the remains laid to rest in Moravia cemetery.
