He enlisted at Fond du Lac, WI, on 30 Aug 1864 for one year. He gave his age as 20 years, his occupation as farmer, and his birthplace as Calumet County, WI. He was a resident of the town of Calumet, Fond du Lac County, WI.
He deserted from Camp Randall, WI, in Nov 1864 and was arrested in Calumet County, WI, on 26 Jan 1865. The man who arrested him was given a reward of $30 and this was charged to Bostwick. He was apparently returned to duty. He was mustered out at Benton Barracks, MO, on 30 May 1865.

Henry W. Bostwick, a Negro who fought on the side of the north in the Civil War, died Tuesday at the Grand Army Home for Veterans near Waupaca. He formerly lived in Oshkosh for many years.
For the last three years he had been a resident of the Veterans Home. Death followed a long period of ill health.
During the last years of the war with the south he was a member of Company C in the Pennsylvania Light Artillery. [3rd US Colored Heavy Artillery]
He was born May 13, 1841, and was 91 years old. Among the survivors is a son of 17.
The widow lived with three sons, Frank, Elmer, and Arden; one sister-in-law, Mrs Tillie Bostwick, of Oshkosh; besides grandchildren and several nephews.
Funeral arrangements are to be announced later.
