Catherine Jean Fratto died May 15, 2011 in her home surrounded by her family due to complications from cancer. She was eighty-five years old.
Catherine was born June 9, 1925 in Salt Lake City to Joseph and Nicoletta Chiodo Sirianni. She was a proud graduate from West High School class of 1943.
After only three dates she accepted the marriage proposal of Charles Frank Fratto. They married on March 21, 1946. Mom's life first and foremost, was her devotion to her husband and her children. She made us all feel so special. We always knew she would be there with her unconditional love, support, encouragement, and faith. She continued this with her grandchildren.
Mom was happiest when she was in her kitchen cooking and making sure we ate. This included feeding many friends and family who came to visit. You never left hungry and if you did it was your own fault.
All holidays were special at Mom's but the most treasured and anticipated has always been Christmas Eve. With all the traditional fish, pasta, and ham and all of us seated together at tables that extended the length of the basement we knew we were going to have another wonderful Christmas.
Catherine was an active member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. A past member of The Legion of Mary, recipient of "Catholic Woman of the Year" for the parish, a Eucharist Minister for the sick, and for years she faithfully attended weekly Bible study class.
Mom had a talent for gardening. The flower arrangements she created in her pots were beautiful. We were always amazed at how many different flowers she could fit into a container.
Although mom did not join the Women's Italian American Civic League until later in life she was always supportive in all their functions and the making of many pizzelles, and sharing stories of the old "West Side" neighborhood. Mom and Dad's pride in their Italian heritage is part of each and every one of us, with the many traditions and Italian sayings; So mom we will always remember you telling us to "Mangia, Mangia!"!
Kay is survived by her daughters Mary (Maria) Fratto, and JoLyn Fratto-Oyler and husband Jerry Oyler, sons and daughters-in-law, Teach and Patricia Fratto, Lynn Keating Fratto, Paul and Mary Fratto, Frank and Lisette Fratto, Patrick and Kim Kunz Fratto, thirteen grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Her faith and her spirituality gave her strength as she endured the loss of her husband Charles Fratto Sr., son, Charles Fratto Jr., grandson Ryan Fratto, and her siblings Frank, Carmen, and Rose Sirianni.
A special thanks to Love Home Health and Hospice and her nurses Jill and Joy and especially her aides Sherri and Lisa and to her special caregiver Erin. We will never be able to fully express our gratitude to our sister Mary for the untiring, faithful, patient, unwavering strength, knowledge and extreme loving care she gave to our mother. Mom and Dad you taught us the meaning of respect, integrity, stewardship, honesty, hard work, and love and your lasting gift to us will always be our siblings. Thank you!
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 3560 West 3650 South. A vigil service will be held on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Neil O'Donnell and Sons Mortuary, 372 East 100 South, where friends may call from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. and one hour prior to mass on Thursday.
Committal: Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 4th Avenue and T Street.
