He carried the famous Van Rensselaer name. He was born about 1741 - 1742 and died at the age of 72 years. He is listed in Early Settlers of New York State by Janet Wethy Foley for burial at this cemetery as Col. Henry L. Van Rensselaer. It appears that the L. is in error for the middle initial. The "L" probably really should have been the capital letter "I." Also the Dutch seem to have used the "I" letter for both I and J. The reason that this alphabet quirk is really unfortunate is because some of the men were given the "I" middle initial to represent the first letter of their father's given name and so "I" could represent either given names of fathers that were the very popular Issac or Johannes or Jacob.

From other records, it appears that his father's given name was Johannes. Henry appears to have been the son of Johannes H. Van Rensselaer and his first wife Angelica (Engeltje) R. Livingston.

Henry (or Hendrick) married Rachel Douw Volkert and possibly had eight children with her. Henry was born at the family mansion at Crailo, Rensselaer County, New York. He was a Colonel or General during the Revolutionary War.

The children of the marriage may have been Johannes-John H. Van Rensselaer who possibly married Maria Lansing, Engeltie (Angelica) H. Van Rensselaer who possibly married John C. Schuyler, Anna H. Van Rensselaer, Nancy H. Van Rensselaer, Peter H. Van Rensselaer(poss. twin), Volkert H. Van Rensselaer (poss. twin), Jeremiah H. Van Rensselaer who possibly married Cornelia Conyn-Conine, and Robert H. Van Rensselaer who married Ann-Anna-Annatje A. Ten Broeck.
