Shirley Rowley Obituary

ROWLEY, Shirley Goodgame Shirley Goodgame Rowley died on January 15, 2023. She was born October 31, 1920 in Bearden, Arkansas to Jesse B Goodgame and Sadie Jewell Pledger. The family moved to Little Rock in 1928 where she attended public schools and graduated as valedictorian of her high school class. She attended Little Rock Junior College. In 1940, she married John Harold Rowley. They moved to Dallas in 1942. The couple had three daughters and she became active in several civic, charitable, and social organizations, among them: the Palladium Club, the Rejebian Book Club, the Penny Ante Investment Club, the First Friday Club, Dallas Film Festival Board, the Variety Children's Charities, and the Northwood Club. Her last few years were a challenge, but most of her 102 years were spent as a seeker and a giver. Books, learning, and ruminating over ideas were part of her entire life from childhood on. She could still recite poems and quote sayings from famous people at 100. Her family was paramount, and her generosity knew no bounds. She and our father began a long tradition of family reunions many summers. Those are some of our most treasured memories. With a focus on civility and manners, all of the grandchildren and the older great-grandchildren learned that it was more polite to announce at the end of a meal, "I have had an elegant sufficiency" than to say "I am full/stuffed." When each perspective son-in-law came for their first meal at the Rowley home, that phrase fell from their lips much to her delight. She will be missed by all. Shirley was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanne Jones, and her husband, Robert Jones. She also lost her husband of 66 years, John, in 2006. She is survived by two daughters and their spouses: Jann and John Treadwell of Dallas and Jo and Tim Birnie of Sebastopol, California. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren and spouses: John C. and Yoko Treadwell, Brian E. and Morgan Treadwell, Alyse and Ron Brennan, Meg King and Andy Gieraltowski, Tate Birnie and Kris Spangler, Brittany and Paul Greene. She is also survived by thirteen great-grandchildren. Still living are two sisters-in-law, Rita Goodgame and Mabel Goodgame, as well as several nieces and nephews. Heartfelt gratitude is extended to Marie and her wonderful group of caregivers who loved and tended to mother for three years. The family is thankful for each of them. There will be no service. If desired, memorials can be made to North Texas Food Bank or Genesis Women's Shelter.
