J. R. Neill(James R. Neill) died as a result of a shotgun wound inflicted by the man whom he sharecropped for in Gibson Co. Tennessee. J.R. went out to the fields one day with a mule and a groundslide in order to gather some corn stalks to use for livestock feed. He cut several stalks of corn, green husks and all, at the base of the stalks, loaded them onto the groundslide and began to guide the mule to the barn. On the way he passed by the home of Mr. Spellings, whom J.R. sharecropped for. Mr. Spellings came out onto his porch and asked J.R., "Is that how you are going to harvest the rest of my corn crops?" J.R. replied, "No, but this is how I gathered these stalks here..." Mr. Spellings then went into his house and came back out with a shotgun and shot J.R. dead. J.R. Neill died instantly as a result. Mr. Spellings was charged with the act of murder and did time in prison as a result.
