Elizabeth was the second oldest child of George Rife and his unknown wife. It is not known for certain where and when she was born, but on her 1850 & 1860 census, her age is listed as 71 and 83 respectively, both state she was born in Maryland. But her father, George, was documented as being in the Bedford/Somerset County area of Pennsylvania in 1771, where he presided in a tavern 10 miles from Bedford on the great road to the Glades. When he died late in 1794, he left 3 unmarried daughters Susannah, Catherine & Elizabeth and a son John. His estate, which was large, was divided between the four children and is documented on a land warrant dated the May 8, 1795. The three daughters, now rich in land, married shortly after their inheritance. Elizabeth married Jacob Bainter that same year in Bedford. About the turn of the century, the daughters and their husbands sold their Pennsylvania land and moved to Monroe Township, Muskingum County, Ohio. In 1860 her family was living in Ostego, in that township.
