Larry, the son of Hubert L. Brown and Pearl H. Brown of Sand Springs Oklahoma, the husband of Vivian R. Brown of Tulsa, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on January 10, 1968 in Oklahoma City. He arrived in Vietnam on August 24 1969, and was assigned to Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

While on patrol near the Lahn An village complex in Que Son District, a Vietnamese suspected to be an enemy VC was seen filling his back pack with rice. With intentions of capturing the suspect, the squad leader, Sgt Brown signaled his men to follow and ran towards the Vietnamese. Several rounds of rifle fire rang out and struck the Marine, killing him by the hostile rifle fire.
