Mildred was widowed at the age of 38 with two young children to raise. Although she had been a stay-at-home Mother, she entered the work force to care and support herself and her children by working in food service at the nearby Troost Elementary School. She found the hours meshed very well with her need to be at home when her family required it. The Troost School was within walking distance of the home, an essential factor since she did not have an automobile nor drive. Even after her children were grown and on their own, she continued to be employed by Troot school, retiring in 1971 as Manager of the food service department there.
