He married Kathryn Morlan in Cheyenne, Oklahoma on July 2, 1937. They moved to Elk City, Oklahoma in 1940 where he joined the staff of the Hedlund Motor Company. He volunteered for active duty in the U.S. Navy where he served in the south Pacific during World War II.
After the war he returned to Elk City, Oklahoma where he and his wife opened the McFarland Music Company. He served as President of the following organizations: the Kiwanis Club, the foundation board of the Great Plans Regional Medical Center, the Elk City Airport board and the Heritage Bank board. He was honored to have served on the Mission Committee of First Baptist Church when Eastside Baptist Church and Fairview Baptist Church were established.
Along with his wife of 73 years, he was survived by a daughter, Jacque Taylor and a son-in-law Henry Urna; two sisters Marjorie ( I.J.) Ward and Doris Jeanne Anderson and one brother, Harry McFarland; his grandchildren, Lindy Taylor and wife Cathy, Mark Taylor and wife Terry and Lori Irwin; his great grandchildren Andrea Thomas and husband Joe, Grant Taylor, Kyle Taylor, Holly Irwin, Logan Taylor, Kellen Taylor, Cole Irwin and Morgan Irwin all of Joplin, Missouri and many nieces, nephews and very good friends.
He was preceded in death by a daughter Jeannie Urna; a son-in-law Carl Taylor and a sister Helen Brewer.
Funeral services will be conducted from the First Baptist Church of Elk City with Rev. Danny Ringer and Dr. Russell Duck officiating. Interment will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of the Martin Funeral Home of Elk City.
