FALCONER - Thomas Howerton Neathery, 99, formerly of 60 Morgan St., died at 9:12 a.m. Monday (Oct. 26, 2009), Heritage Village Rehab and Skilled Nursing Center. A area resident most of his life, he was born March 14, 1910, in Belmont, N.Y., the son of the Rev. Robert W. and Rosa Lee Neathery. He was a graduate of Falconer High School in 1928 and attended University of Richmond from 1929 to 1931. Graduated from New York State Bankers School for Public Relations in cooperation with Syracuse University in 1953, and from Bankers School of Agriculture in cooperation with Cornell University in 1955. He was a member of Jamestown Chapter American Institute of Banking, where he received a pre-standard certificate and completed several standard and graduate courses. An area banker for 51 years, he started his career with the former First National Bank of Falconer, and in 1955 was promoted to assistant vice-president of the former Chautauqua National Bank of Jamestown. In 1964, he was appointed to vice-president and manager of the Falconer office and in 1971 was appointed to chairman of board of directors at Falconer office of Marine Midland Bank Chautauqua National Association, retiring in 1975. He was a member and past president of the Chautauqua County Bankers Association, and member of executive committee of Group I New York State Bankers Association.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Falconer, where he had served as chairman of the Deaconate Board, past chairman of the Board of Trustees, on the Board of Christian Education and past moderator and superintendent of Sunday school, and was a choir member. For more than 30 years, he was treasurer of the Chautauqua Baptist Association, and past president of the Chautauqua Baptist Union at Chautauqua. He served two terms on the governing board of New York State Baptist convention from 1955 to 1960. He was a member of Chadakoin Lodge 130 I.O.O.F., where he was a past noble grand, financial secretary, past district deputy grand master Chautauqua District 3 from 1975 to 1976 and past grand chaplain of Grand Lodge I.O.O.F. of New York from 1987 to 1988. He was a member of Mt. Moriah Lodge 145 F&AM, where he was raised April 17, 1951, and Sylvan Lodge 303 F&AM. He joined the Scottish Rite Bodies in 1951. He served as thrice potent master of Lodge of Perfection in 1960 and was standard bearer of the consistory from 1960 to 1972. He held the positions of executive secretary, secretary emeritus, and past presiding officers association of the Jamestown Consistory. He received the 33rd degree in Chicago, Sept. 26, 1979. He was also a member of Ismilia Temple of Buffalo, Jamestown Shrine Club, Royal Order of Jesters Court 22, Jamestown Commandery, Western Sun Chapter No. 67 R.A.M. He was a former member of Svensk Forest 183, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Dunkirk Council 25 Cryptic Masons, Conewango Council 243 Allied Mason-ic Degrees, St. Mark's Covclave, Red Cross of Constatine, and Royal Order of Scotland. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1681, B.P.O. Elks Lodge 263, a charter member and past president of the Falconer Lions Club. He was Cub Master of Pack 68 from 1944 to 1946. He served as a trustee, and past chairman of zoning board for the village of Falconer and was a member of the Falconer Central School Board from 1948 to 1950. He was past treasurer of both the Chautauqua County Humane Society and Falconer Area Helping Hands Program. He was an honorary member of the board of directors and past treasurer and director of the Chautauqua Co. Agricultural Corporation. He was an honorary member of the Board of Directors of the Gerry Homes of which he had served as assistant treasurer, as a board member and treasurer for 45 years. He had served as past vice-president of the Falconer Business Association and the Area Merchants Bowling League. In 1983 he received the National Council of Christian and Jews Award for Outstanding Service. He was dearly loved by his family and friends. Surviving are his son, Thomas H. Neathery Jr., of Loxahatchee, Fla.; a daughter, Nancye N. Halm of Front Royal, Va.; six grandchildren: Margaret Elizabeth Ammons of Harpers Ferry, W. Va., Geoffrey M. Mack of Manassas, Va., Jennifer C. Hill of Bentonville, Va., Peter J. Mack of Oceanside, N.Y., Stephen H. Neathery of Boca Raton, Fla., and James A. Neathery of Dallas, Texas; and nine great-grandchildren: Jarred Hill of Bentonville, Va., Chelsea Neathery of Or-chard Park, Kayla Ammons of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., Corbin and Thomas Mack, both of Manassas, Va., David and Jordin Mack of Oceanside, N.Y., and Thomas J. and Andrew H. Neathery of Dallas, Texas.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret LeRoy Neathery, whom he married Jan. 3, 1931, and who died May 17, 2003. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the First Baptist Church of Falconer. The Rev. Robert Lewis will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery Friends will be received by the family from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Falconer Funeral Home. An I.O.O.F. memorial service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. A Masonic memorial service will be conducted at 6:45 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
