Obituary from the Detroit Free Press on August 3, 1989:

He was the great grandson of one of Wyandotte's earliest settlers and the brother of Wayne County Circuit Judge (and former Wayne County Prosecutor) William Cahalan. In his own right, he was a dedicated family man and a supporter of several state and local Democratic politicians.

James began working for Fruehauf Trailer in the 1940s and retired in 1987 after many years as Vice President. He was an assistant to the President of ACME Manufacturing Company in Troy, where he remained until his retirement in February (1989). He died Monday (July 31, 1989) of cancer at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. He was 71.

"Jim was an excellent public servant - he always went beyond what was required of him. If he was your friend and your supporter, he wouldn't say it, but he would go to work on your behalf" said Wyandotte mayor James DeSana, who knew Mr. Cahalan for more than 30 years.

Mr. Cahalan's great grandfather came to Wyandotte from Ireland in 1848

A resident of Wyandotte most of his life, Mr. Cahalan served as the city's Director of Civil Defense for more than 30 years unitl 1987. He was a graduate of the now closed St. Patrick's High School in Wyandotte and he studied Business Administration at the University of Detroit.

"He has been a great friend since I was 6 years old" said Ralph Schweiss, 71, of Wyandotte. "His family came first, living a good life was next, then, politics."

He also was active in the campaigns of former Governor G Mennan (Soapy) Williams, former US Senator William Hart, and former Detroit Mayor Jerome Cavanaugh, all deceased, and former Wayne County Sheriff and County Executive William Lucas, the nominee for the nation's assistant attorney general for the civil rights enforcement post.

He also practiced politics a little closer to home, advising his brother during William Cahalan's years as prosecutor and later, as state racing commissioner.

Mr. Cahalan is survived by his wife Elizabeth; brothers Joseph, Lawrence and William; sister Ann Marie Sullivan; sons James Jr. and Michael; daughters Patricia Paquette and Elizabeth Lilienthal, and 12 grandchildren
