Long time area resident, Charles B. Girton of 174 DeHaven Street, died Wednesday at a Walla Walla hospital. Girton, 92, had been in failing health for the past year.

Funeral services will be p.m. Friday at the Munselle-Rhodes Chapel with the Rev. Paul White of the First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.

Born April 10, 1875 in Iowa, Girton came with his family by wagon train in 1888 to Pendleton where they homesteaded south of the town. He married Edith Warner in Pendleton, June 5, 1899, and the couple moved to Dalton Garden, Idaho, where they lived for eight years, returning to Oregon in the 1920s.

The pair built a home on the Walla Walla River and were fruit farmers for many years. Girton lived in Umatilla County for 72 years and lately his favorite hobby was his garden. His wife died in 1958 and three children also died earlier.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Zena Stephens and Mrs. Rupert (Ethel) Walker, both of Milton-Freewater; two sons, Stanley Girton of Milton-Freewater and the Rev. Charles Girton of Gallup, New Mexico; 13 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
