Carl Ackerman, 79

Carl Thomas Ackerman, 79, Portsmouth, died Tuesday, April 22, 1991, at his residence.

A native of Portsmouth, he was horn June 30, 1917, and was an adopted son of the late Edward and Nancy Hawkins Ackerman. Well-known for his collection of history of Portsmouth and surrounding area, he was the groundskeeper for Riverview Manor (formerly Old Market Square) and a former employee of Coca Cola and Herms Floral Company for many years. He was a member of Central Church of Christ.

He was In Army veteran of World War II, where he participated in the Normandy Invasion. He became a prisoner of war at St. Lo, France. He, along with other prisoners of war, formed the Scioto River Valley Chapter of Prisoners of War, of which he was a past commander. He was a life member of the James Dickey Post 23 of the American Legion and the Voiture 40 et 8, was Citizen of the Year for the Modern Woodmen of the World in 1978, and was a WSAZ TV Home
Town Hero in 1993.

He will be missed by his family and friends.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Moore Ackerman, whom he married Dec. 6, 1948, in Russell, Ky.; a brother-in-law, William Ackerman; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Clyde and Edna Shonkwiler; sister-in-law, Ruby Meeker and Maxine Goad; many nephews, nieces, cousins, and a host of dear and beloved friends.

Services wall he held at 11 a.m. Friday at Brant Funeral Home in Portsmouth, with Dennis Dawes and Gary Shonkwiler, ministers officiating. Burial Will be in Memorial Burial Park, with military honors by the J amen Dickey Post.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

The family's favorite charity is Central Church of Christ.
