Ray was born in East Sioux Falls, SD 22 January 1889. Moved as a boy to Riverside Community in McCook County, SD. After his father died, took over the responsibility of operating the family farm when he was 16. Married Emma Weiland 12 October 1910. Lived on the farm until 1919. Moved to a raw piece of land in Hand County, SD, and made all the improvements including a modern house with a 32 volt electric light plant in the basement. In 1931 they sold the farm and purchased a Tourist Court in St. Lawrence, SD. Ray served as school custodian for several years. Moved to Vancouver, WA in 1942. After 1946 they made their home on a 5-acre tract East of Vancouver. Address was 1812 Bella Vista Road. Home was later sold to son Glenn.

Before retirement, Ray worked as a pipe fitter installing sprinkler systems for fire control. After retirement, Ray kept his 5 acre tract looking like a park. He died of a massive heart attack on 6 August 1960. Final resting place Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Vancouver, WA.
