Son of Lucinda (Driver) and Pleasant Butram. Jacob married Rebecca Jane "Becky" Law on 21 Dec 1864 during the Civil War. Their children were William W., Cenia M.M.F. "Cenie" or "Senie", and Joseph W. Butrum.

Jacob was a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War.

He died in the home of his grandson, Jay CALDWELL, of Route #3, Westmorland, Sumner Co.,Tennessee on 8 May 1927. He was drawing a military pension of $72.00 per month at the time he died. Jacob B. BUTRUM is buried in the Underwood Cemetery in Macon Co.,Tennessee, along with his father and many other family members. The tombstone inscription is ... Jacob B. BUTRUM, Co. A, 9th KY Inf., (no dates). The MACON COUNTY (TN) CEMETERY BOOK, VOL. II shows two fieldstones next to Jacob's marker that once read "Senie" and "Jane". These two are believed to be for Jacob's daughter, Senie or Cenie, born c. 1870, and his wife, Rebecca Jane. The names on these two stones were no longer visible when we visited in August 1996. On the other side of Jacob there are four more unmarked fieldstones. The cemetery book does not have any more information about these.

In a book titled HISTORY OF MACON CO.Tennessee, by Harold G. Blankenship, there is a listing for Jacob BUTRUM, PVT, I Company (Union); mustered in September 25, 1861, mustered out December 16, 1864. I don't know the source of Mr. Blankenship's information but I looked up Jacob's Military Service Record on microfilm at the Tennessee State Archives and found him in Co. A, 9th Kentucky Infantry, U.S.A. Jacob B. BUTRAM, age 22, joined and enlisted on Sept. 25, 1861 at Allen or Monroe County, KY for 3 years. He appeared on a Company Muster-In Roll dated Nov. 26, 1861 at Adair Co., KY. Another Company Muster Roll dated April 30 to August 31, 1862 shows . . . "Absent - In hospital in Nashville". Still age 22, he was discharged Sept. 1, 1862 at Louisville, KY on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability. This was made official on Oct. 11, 1862 when his outfit reached Nashville,Tennessee.

The record shows he was discharged due to "chronic diarrhea of six months standing". The same record described him as 5' 7" tall, with light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair. It also said he was born in and that he was a farmer prior to the war. (NOTE: He was age 22 when he enlisted and still 22 when he was discharged so it looks like he was born in Sept. after the 1st and before the 25th day of the month, but the 1900 Census shows him born in January.)

His pension record gives his birth date as 5 January 1840 in . His death certificate gives his birth date as 5 November 1838.
