Services for Mattie Shuler Protz, 82, of Orchard Lane, are scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday at Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev. Robert E. Richardson officiating. Burial is to follow at Sunset Gardens.
Mrs. Protz died Monday (Jan. 10, 1994) at Guadalupe Medical Center.
She was born April 15, 1911, in Gravette, Ark. She married Dr. A.C. Shuler in Oklahoma in 1935. They moved to Hobbs that year, where he practiced medicine. They moved to Carlsbad in 1940 where he continued his practice until his retirement in 1952. He preceded her in death in 1956.
She married Donald E. Protz, a mining engineer, in 1957. The couple purchased the Red Barn restaurant in La Huerta in 1961. They owned and operated it until it burned down two years later. After the fire, Mrs. Protz led a successful effort to create and establish the La Huerta Volunteer Fire Department, and served on its first board of directors. Mr. Protz preceded her in death in December 1976.
Mrs. Protz was active with Grace Episcopal Church and served on the board of directors of the Carlsbad Memorial Hospital.
Survivors include one son, James L. Shuler, of Carlsbad; one daughter, Jane Shuler, of Carlsbad; two brothers, Nick Hendren, of Bentonville, Ark., and James L. Hendren, of Albuquerque; one sister, Mrs. George Bloom, of Longview, Texas; and one grandchild.
Services are being handled by Denton Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Carlsbad Foundation.
