Jonathan was the son of Samuel Arnold and Mary Nichols of Exeter and North Kingstown, Rhode Island. He was married about 1798 to Hannah Gardiner and with her appears to have had about five children, possibly more. He appears on the 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, and 1860 censuses in North Kingstown, living in Lafayette in 1860. His known or suspected children are:

* George Nichols, b. 1799, m. Mercy Nichols

* Joseph, b. 1802, d. 11 Feb 1843 in 41 year, m. Ruth Fry, b. 1802, d. 30 April 1888 in her 87 year.

* Elizabeth, b. 27 April 1805, d. 7 Aug 1865, m. William S. Weeden, b. 1801, d. 15 July 1853 (?)

* Susan (according to Gardiner genealogy)

* Mary, b. 1810, on 1850 and 1860 census with her father

The following were with him on the 1850 census, and were sons of his deceased son, George N. Arnold:

* Jonathan N., b. 1824

* John F., b. 1832

Samuel G. Arnold and Richard Arnold may both be sons of Jonathan who each have a child buried in his family cemetery.
