He was in the Civil War and fought for the Union. He married Mary Jane Cather 16 August 1870 in Lewis County. Edgar and Mary Jane had two children, Kirk Cather Smith Sr., and Maud Smith McGuire.
The Weston Independent, Tues. 7 Dec. 1915:
"SMITH, EDGAR, died at Indian Springs, Georgia where he had gone for his health, about 75 years of age. Survived by two children, Mrs. Maude McGuire of this city, and Kirk W. Smith of Ohio."
