Clarence was born October 22, 1933, in La Crosse, Wisc., the son of Clarence and Gilma ( Storlie) Quanrud. He was raised in Preston and was a 1951 graduate of Preston High School where he was a member of their championship football team. He attended Luther College in Decorah for one year and then enlisted in the US Navy serving from 1952 - 56 on the U.S.S. Oriskany in the Pacific. Upon his return from the military he attended Winona State College graduating in 1959 with a B.A. degree in business. He married Martha Johnson October 17, 1958, at Elstad Lutheran Church in rural Highland, Minn. The couple made their made home first in Winona and then moved to Preston in 1959. He was a probation and parole officer for Fillmore and Houston Co.'s and then later for Community Corrections with Fillmore, Olmsted and Dodge Co.'s retiring in 1993. He most recently had been a part-time employee of Root River Hardwoods in Preston.
Clarence was a longtime member of Christ Lutheran Church in Preston. He had also been a Boy Scout leader, had been Mayor of Preston for 8 years, was a member of the Preston American Legion and VFW and was a past commander for both groups, was a member of the Preston Volunteer Fire Dept. for 22 years, the Preston Ambulance Service serving as director, was a member of the Preston Masonic Lodge and the Rochester Shriner's Cycle Patrol. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, outdoorsmen and loved his family, traveling and golf.
Clarence is survived by his wife, Martha; his children, Susan (Mike) Tangen of Fountain, and Stuart Quanrud of Preston; five grandchildren, Michael Tangen, Jayna Tangen, Kelsey Tangen, Ryan Quanrud and Caleb Quanrud; one sister, Georgia (Dave) Smith of Forsythe, Missouri; a stepbrother, Curtis (Tess) Johnson of Kasson; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather.
The memorial service will be 2:30 p.m., Saturday, May 7, 2011, at Christ Lutheran Church with Rev. Dave Jore officiating. Military rites will be held at Crown Hill Cemetery in Preston following the services. Friends may call at the church on Saturday starting at 12:30 until the time of service.
