James M. Peyton, in Mexia 44 years, passes Away Monday

James Marcus Peyton, 88, wellknown retired businessman and resident of Mexia for the past 44 years passed away Monday at Baylor hospital in Dallas, where he had been receiving treatment for the past three weeks. He had been in failing health for the past two years.

A pioneer of this section, the deceased was born in Louisiana September 25, 1857, and as a small child moved with his parents to Limestone County. The family first settled at the Point Enterprise community, later moving to Freestone County and to Mexia 44 years ago. For many years he owned and operated the Peyton and Sons grocery firm.

He was preceded in death by his wife and two sons, George L Peyton and W. L. Peyton.

Funeral services were conducted at the residence, 108 S. Canton street, at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. E. L. Craig, pastor of the First Methodist church officiating.

Interment was in the Mexia cemetery with Corley funeral home in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include two grandsons, William Marcus Peyton, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Norman Francis Peyton; one sister, Mrs. Barbara P. Collins of Medina, Texas and a large number of nieces and nephews.

Active pallbearers were Bailey Peyton, Teague; Frank Peyton, Fairfield; H. W. Regester, Corsicana; and L. L. Steele, H.L. Kidd, W. W. Mason and W. D. Hight, all of Mexia.

Honorary pallbearers include Judge Lex Smith, Teague; Bob Senter, Teague; and J. W. Clark, John E. Armstrong, Cecil Cook, David Murphy, Dr. M. M. Brown and Dr. O. T. Chistoffer, all of Mexia.
