BIRTH: Data from Fritz McDuffie (Jean Grube B24 and 28). Also death data. ML Driscoll gives his birth date as 20 Apr 1841; perhaps the later date is his baptism; MLD, "Descendants of the NH MacDuffees", DAR, 1949, p.20. !DEATH: He died 14 Jul 1917 at Oneida, NY, according to Fritz McDuffie, Ibid. This information came from "Us" by Cyrus Colton MacDuffee and Mary Bean MacDuffee, manuscript in Madison, WI, Dec 1953 (see Helen Berg, Apr 1985).

MARRIAGE: His three wives are mentioned by Fritz McDuffie, Ibid.

MISC.: Cyrus Thompson attended Albany Normal School, now known as New York State Teachers College, in 1861. In 1862 the entire student body enlisted in the 44th New York Volunteers. His first battle was at Antietam, where he received a bullet through the blanket roll on his shoulder. He was at Little Round Top in the Battle of Gettysburg, where his name, Cyrus McDuffy, is on the magnificent monument to the New York 44th Regiment. He was also in the Army of the Potomac in the Wilderness campaign. Once he received a bullet through the peak of his cap! He was transferred to the 140th New York Volunteers after a bout of typhoid fever, and he was present at Lee's surrender at Appomatox Court House.

He married first Kate Schwartz of McDuffietown, but she died very soon afterwards.
He was then a carpenter, the trade of his father, and married Anna Hubbard of Chittenango on 2 Oct 1873. They moved to Oneida, where Cyrus joined his wife's church, the Episcopal Church. Anna died 2 Apr 1889 of typhoid fever.
On 5 Nov 1890, Cyrus married Elizabeth Louise Seewir of Lawrence, Kansas, in the Episcopal St. Paul's Cathedral in Syracuse.

Cyrus died 14 Jul 1917 of cancer of the lungs and throat, age 75 years. He is buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneida, NY. Information from Prof. Cyrus Colton MacDuffee, his only son, in "Us", written in 1953, pgs 18 and 19. He was a quiet man, somewhat self-effacing, noted for his absolute integrity. He stood 5 feet 11 inches tall and was well built.

This regiment, Col. Stephen W. Stryker, was recruited under the auspices of the Ellsworth Association of the State of New York. The men reported individually at Albany, where the regiment was organized under orders from the State dated October 15, 1861. The companies were mustered in the service of the United States for three years, A, E, C, D and E August 30; F and G September 6; H and I September 15, and K September 24, 1861. September 20, 1862, Companies C and E were merged into the others, and replaced by new companies, recruited at Albany, October 21, 1862. New Company E was also known as the Normal School Company.
