Enlisted 28 Aug 1861 (credited to Brandon), mustered as Pvt. in Co. H 5th Vermont Infantry 16 Sep 1861, wounded and pow at Savage's Station 29 Jun 1862, paroled, re-enlisted 15 Dec 1863, mustered out 29 Jun 1864.

From the Rutland Daily Herald, June 5, 1912:
Chittenden – M.M. Johnson died at his home here at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon after a few weeks' illness with a complication of diseases. He was 70 years old. He leaves a wife, Mrs. Delia Chase Johnson; two sons, E.H. Johnson of Rutland and A.P. Johnson of Winthrop, Mass.; three grandchildren, Harry and Roland Johnson of Rutland and Orland, son of A.P. Johnson; and three brothers, William, Willard and Osburn Johnson. The funeral will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial will be at Horton cemetery.
