Jefferson Nathaniel Ward (Jeff) was the seventh son of James Ward Jr, the third by his second wife, Nancy E Clifton. By the time Jeff was born, the Ward family had been in Texas almost 30 years, making them a Texas Republic Family. Jeff's grandfather, James Ward Sr, arrived in Texas in fall, 1837 according to his application for a land grant. The family apparently settled in the area between Miller Grove and Greenview.

Jeff married Florence Anna Barnard in 1895 and together they had six children, five of whom lived to marry and have children of their own. Sometime after 1910 Jeff and Florence tried to buy land from the Weaver family in Greenview, but were unable to so they purchased the farm of Frank Barnard (Florence's father)in Arbala.

There is a reference in a history written about Arbala (in the Hopkins Genealogical Society Library) to the musical abilities of the Ward brothers and the demand for their talents at all the community dances and parties. I believe the brothers to be Jeff and Geo Washington (Uncle Dick in the family). There is also mention of Jeff having a barber shop in the back of the Arbala store in the early 1900's.

Jeff had a stroke while plowing one day and collapsed and died before he could reach the farm house. Like his father, grandfather and great-grandfather before him, he died relatively young. However, he left a legacy of hard-working men and women who proudly carried the Ward name to future generations.
