Aaron Eugene "Jack" Hartwell, 83, passed away at his home Sunday, December 26, 2010. He was born in Columbia, S.C. and lived in Asbury Park for the past 66 years. He attended the public school system in Columbia S.C. Jack proudly served our country in the U.S. Army. He retired in 1989 from both Fort Monmouth where he was employed as a supply clerk for 35 years and from Monmouth University in 1992 after 26 years as a custodian. He was a member of Allen Chapel A.M.E Church in Asbury Park where he diligently served on the Trustee Board. He met Vernell Carpenter in 1968, and the relationship blossomed into marriage in 1988. They were together for 42 years.
He was predeceased by his parents Arthur and Bessie Hartwell, son Eugene Sylvester Hartwell, sister Thelma Davis and step-son Sgt. John Carpenter. He is survived by his loving wife, Vernell Hartwell; three daughters: Gloria Johnson and her husband Ed of Washington, D.C., Frances Bennett of Asbury Park, Rudy Canzater of Columbia, S.C.; his son Anthony Hartwell and his wife Melinda of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters: Rachel Lattimore of Asbury Park, and Marian Evains of Eatontown; two step-daughters: Gloria Poole and Denise Carpenter both of Asbury Park; two step-sons: Samuel and Robert Carpenter of Asbury Park; two aunts, Martha Brooks of California and Henrietta Brooks of Neptune; four nephews: Richard Evains of Freehold, and Earle, Donald and William Davis of Asbury Park. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, 17 step grandchildren and 27 step great grandchildren and close friends, Frances Miller of Neptune and Joe Harris of South Carolina.
A Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 am, Wednesday at the church. Interment will be at Monmouth Memorial Park in Tinton Falls, NJ.
