He was a graduate of Milton Academy and Harvard University. He served in the US Navy in the Pacific in WWII. He accompanied his father RAdm Byrd on 1947 Antarctica expedition. He was the grandson of Richard Evelyn Byrd, Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates 1908-1914; the son of RAdm Richard Evelyn Byrd Jr USN aviator and polar explorer; and the nephew of Senator Harry F Byrd Sr (VA). He was survived by his sisters, Evelyn Bolling Byrd Clarke (1922-2007); Katharine Agnes Byrd Breyer; and Helen P Byrd Stabler (1926-1974).
He has been referred to as Richard Evelyn Byrd Jr although the "Jr" designation was his father's.
Interment on October 14, 1988.
