Paul Schoonmaker, 73, well known resident, died very suddenly Tuesday,September 18th, after returning from attending a funeral in Bradford.
Mr. Schoonmaker appeared in good health and after arriving back in Smethport from Bradford Tuesday evening, let his wife out of the car in front to their home and drove around to his garage. He came into the house and after preparing to retire died before a physician could arrive. Death was caused by a coronary infraction.
He was born in Kingston, N. Y., April 15, 1878, the son of Angeline Kearney and George A. Schoonmaker.
On August 20, 1904, he was married to Augusta Oelin at Wheeling, W. Va. They had lived in Pittsburgh and Bradford before moving to Smethport in 1933 and they had lived here continuously except for winters spent in Florida.
Mr. Schoonmaker, a machinist by trade, had been employed by the Dresser Mfg. Co. before his retirement several years ago.
They had four children: Mrs. Florence H. Anderson of Derrick
City: Mrs. Helen L. Douglas, Duke Center; M.Sgt. Howard Schoonmaker. now in Korea; and the late Lt. George Schoonmaker, killed over Germany Nov. 8, 1945.
In addition to his wife and three children, the deceased is survived by four brothers: Clark Schoonmaker, Smethport R.D. 3: Noble B. Schoonmaker. Minneapolis,. Minn.; Myron B. Schoonmaker, Olean; and Mark Schoonmaker. Eldred; and one sister, Mrs. Goldie Acker of Smethport R.D. 2. He is also survived by nine grandchildren.
He was a member of the Smethport Methodist Church and the
Protective Home Circle Lodge of Smethport.
Mr. Schoonmaker was very interesting in promoting Boy Scouting and especially In the East Smethport Boy Scout troop.
He will be buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, but definite funeral details can not be made until news is received from his son in Korea.
