--She was 6th of 8 children of a single mother, Miss Violet Painter.
--Occupation: Mattie was a spinner at a cotton mill until her marriage.
--Mattie married James M. Rape in 1910; they had 7 sons: David Baxter, Thomas Watson, Benjamin Franklin, Roy Martin, Warren Gamaliel, Dwight Henderson, & Billy Newell Rape.
--Cause of death: pulmonary edema & nephritis, complicated by pregnancy. Mattie's baby was delivered right after her death. He survived just 2 years.
Note: many family records give Mattie's middle name as Rosabella, but her headstone says Elizabeth. E is her middle initial in many records.
--4 of her sons later changed their name from Rape to Rappe for obvious reasons.
