Charles W. "Chuck" Hellie

Hellie, Charles W. "Chuck" Ann Arbor, MI
Charles W. Hellie, 87, passed away peacefully at home on April 29, 2011. He lived in Ann Arbor for 47 years. Chuck was born in Catasauqua, PA to Andrew T. and Helen (Kuehner) Hellie on February 22, 1924. He married Ann L. Shea on July 2, 1946 in Williamsport, PA. He graduated from Bucknell University in 1945, and received his Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1948. He was a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity. Chuck was a veteran of World War II and served in the Navy as a Lieutenant JG from 1944-1947. His first job was with Westinghouse Atomic Power Division from 1949-1951. Chuck was project engineer on the design and development of a control system used for the reactor of the Nautilus, the first nuclear powered submarine. From 1951-1955 he worked for Dumont Airplane Instruments. In 1955 he joined Burroughs Corp and worked on the Atlas Guidance Computer program. Chuck transferred from West Chester, PA to Ann Arbor in 1963 while working as a Corporate Manager. In 1965 he went to work for Conductron Corp. where he managed the Dragon Tracker Production program. In 1970, he became Director of Operations. In 1971, Chuck and his wife opened a printing business named Graphic Communications which was located in Plymouth, MI. He sold the business in 1978, but continued to work there as an employee until he retired. Chuck is survived by his wife, Ann; sons, Dr. C. Michael (Debra) Hellie of Chelsea, MI, Stephen S. (Jan) Hellie of Hollister, CA, John S. (Linda) Hellie of Rangeley, ME; daughter, Mary E. (Fred) Caryl of Ann Arbor; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; six nieces and one nephew. Cremation has taken place and no service will be held at this time. Contributions may be made to Arbor Hospice Foundation of Ann Arbor, Huron Valley Ambulance or the Humane Society of Huron Valley. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Arbor Hospice of Ann Arbor and the St. Joseph Mercy Palliative Care team.
