Edela's husband, Pehr Jacobsson (1812-1865), was baptized into the LDS Church in 1854 in the Baltic Sea; Edela was baptized the following year. Because of subsequent persecution, Pehr decided to send his family to America; however, based on inadequate finances, Edela (leaving Pehr & Francis in Sweden) left Malmo, Sweden with 4 children on April 15, 1863, arriving in Salt Lake City on September 2, 1863. Pehr died of pneumonia in Spring of 1864, and Francis arrived in Salt Lake City later in 1864. For awhile, Edela and the two younger children resided with her sister, Hannah Nielsson Hogan, in a one-room log cabin with a lean-to shanty in Bountiful, Utah. Mary went to live with a family in Springville, Utah; Henry Peter lived with a family in Santaquin, Utah.

The top portion of her original headstone broke off some time ago; a replacement now lies adjacent to it.
