Abel T. Kissinger, 63, of 458 Schuylkill Ave., was injured fatally shortly after midnight last night when he was struck by a motorcycle at Schuylkill avenue and Green street. He died at 1:44 a.m. in the Reading Hospital. Physicians reported he suffered a fractured right leg, head injuries and cuts of the right ear.
In critical condition in the same hospital is the motorcyclist, Jack B. Smith, 19, Sinking Spring R.D. 2, who suffered head and internal injuries and body bruises.
City Detective William O. Focht reported that Kissinger was apparently en route home from the Berks County Clubmen's Assn. last night in the Rainbow Relief Assn., 712 Washington St. Kissinger was a delegate from the Tivoli Beneficial Assn., 133 Blair Ave. Crossing Avenue Focht said Kissinger was apparently crossing Schuylkill avenue from the east to the west when he was struck by Smith's motorcycle which was traveling south on Schuylkill avenue. Kenneth Clouser and Joseph Gallagher, drivers for the Schuylkill Fire Co., were sitting in the enginehouse on the southwest corner of the intersection when they heard a crash and rushed out to investigate. When they reached the street they saw the two men in the intersection and the motorcycle on its side a short distance away. The drivers placed the men in the fire company's ambulance and took them to the hospital. Focht reported that the motorcycle skidded about 30 feet on Schuylkill avenue before upsetting and then slid on its side another 10 feet before stopping. Railroad Worker Kissinger was employed by the Reading Co. for 44 years. He was a member of the Hope Lutheran Church; Reading Nest No. 2, Fraternal Order of Orioles; the 20th Century Quakers, Ruscombmanor Fire Co., Tivoli Beneficial Assn. and camping club and P&R Relief Assn. Surviving are his widow, Maude (Marks) Kissinger, and a brother, Robert C., Reading. Arrangements are in charge of T. C. Auman, Inc., funeral directors.
