James L. Thompson, 79, Atlanta, passed away at 8:07 p.m. Tuesday (May 3, 2011) at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center, Normal.

He was born Jan. 6, 1932 in Lincoln to Roy H. and Mona B. Bishop Thompson. He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sons, Martin and Michael and three sisters, Bernadine Houghton, Donnabelle Barton and Madeline Thompson.

He married Marian Renfrow on Nov. 27, 1954, in rural Atlanta. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Brenda (Doug) Garey and Cathy (Steve) Dreyer, all of Atlanta; four grandchildren, Clint Garey, Atlanta; Caleb (Justine Lowery) Garey, Waynesville and Kate and Justin Dreyer of Atlanta; one great-grandchild, Tucker Garey, Waynesville and by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He served in the U.S. Army in Korea and in the Army Reserve for eight years.
