Services for John Arthur Reed will be 11 a.m., Monday, May 9, 2011, at Destiny Life Church. John will be laid to rest at Oakhaven Memorial Gardens under the direction of Rice Funeral Service. Friends may visit at the funeral home from noon to 6 on Sunday, May 8 with the family there to receive visitors from 1 to 3. John passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2011. He was 82.

Born Feb. 6, 1929, in Washington, Ark., to John and Anna Lee (Tanner) Reed, John received his education in both Ada and Collinsville. At the age of 17 he joined the Marines where he completed his education. He worked for a short time with a brick and tile company before returning to military service for a five-year tour of duty in the Army as a medic. He returned to Oklahoma after receiving an honorable discharge, and began a 30-year career with the U.S. Postal Service.

On Sept. 1, 1956, John and Nettie Marie Corley married in Verdigris. Two daughters and a son completed their family. They made their first home in Tulsa and later lived in Claremore before moving to Broken Arrow in 1996.

Retirement years were filled with travel to visit family and friends and the occasional odd job. Hunting and fishing, however, as everyone who knew John was aware, were his favorite pastimes; activities that he could share with his grandsons. Grandchildren held a treasured place in John's heart; his affection for them was always evident.

A faithful man, John served God with all his soul. He served his Country proudly in the Korean War with all his might. And he served his family with all his heart. He is survived by his wife, Nettie, of their home in Broken Arrow; his children, Anna Moore of Houston, Texas, Louise Franklin and husband, Adair, of Chesapeake, Va., and John Reed, Jr. and wife, Pamela, of Claremore; grandchildren, Andrea James, of Houston, Texas, Brayden Emerick and husband, Bobby, Brittney Franklin, Austin Franklin, and Alex Franklin, all of Chesapeake, Va., Tiffany Scott, Jonathan Reed, and Jeremiah Reed, all of Claremore, Macie Reed of Dallas, Jamison Reed, Libby Reed and Eli Reed, also of Claremore; and two great grandchildren, Jackson and Shelby Emerick of Virginia Beach, Va.. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.

In lieu of flowers or other condolences, please consider sending a donation in John's name to Clarehouse, 7617 S. Mingo Road, Tulsa, OK 74133.
